CNC Routing Aluminium

Routed aluminium covers the middle ground between signwork and fabrication — brackets, panels, marine fit-out parts, signage letters and structural detail.

What this is

Aluminium routing is where signwork crosses over into light fabrication. Single-skin aluminium plate gives you structural integrity that ACM can't, and the routed edge is clean enough to deliver to a fabricator or fit straight onto a job. Marine fit-out, custom brackets, signage letters in solid aluminium, machine-shop fixture plates — all aluminium territory.

The boundary between this page and ACM (the composite panel) is worth knowing. ACM is two thin aluminium skins bonded to a plastic core — light, flat, paintable, ideal for signage faces. Solid aluminium plate is heavier, structurally rigid, weldable, and the right choice when the part has to carry a load or hold a thread. Confirm with us if you're unsure which one your job needs.

We route aluminium for signwriters making sign-can backers, fabricators making brackets and mounting plates, marine customers making cleat backers and fit-out detail, and trade shops making one-off custom parts. Tooling, feeds, and pass count depend on grade and thickness — we confirm against your file. Send the alloy grade if you know it (5005, 5083, 6061 are common); if you don't, send the supplier or the photo of the label.

All aluminium work routes with coolant where required and a follow-up deburr; both factored into the quote. For threaded mount holes, see the Tapping add-on.

When to use

  • Structural signage backers and brackets
  • Marine fit-out plates, cleat backers, helm and pedestal detail
  • Light fabrication: machine guards, mounting plates, fixture parts
  • Solid aluminium letters and signage where rigidity matters
  • Repeat-order trade work with consistent specs

When not to use

  • Routed signage faces that ACM would handle more cheaply
  • Heavy structural work that needs welding, bending or forming (different process)
  • Anything outside our confirmed thickness range — flag for review

FAQ

What aluminium grades can you route?
Common signwriting and fabrication grades — 5005 sheet, 5083 plate, 6061 plate — all route well. Speciality grades, anodised or pre-painted stock, on request. Send the alloy or the supplier and we'll confirm before quoting.
Will the edge need deburring?
Aluminium always leaves a small burr on the cut edge — we deburr as a standard step on metal cuts. Tell us if you need a specific edge finish (sanded, polished, painted) and we'll add that as an add-on.
What file types can I send?
DXF is the cleanest — that's a single-line vector format the cutter reads directly. AI, SVG, PDF, EPS and DWG all work too. If you've only got a JPG or a sketch on paper, send it anyway and we'll tidy it for you (small file-prep charge applies).
How should I prepare a DXF?
Outlines only, no fills. One closed path per cut. Different operations (cut, engrave, drill) on different layers so we know what gets which tool. Convert text to outlines before exporting so we don't have to chase the same font. If anything's ambiguous, write it in the file name or add a note in the quote request.
How quick is a quote?
Most quote requests come back within 1 business day, Mon-Fri. Simple trade jobs are usually faster during business hours. Complex jobs, supplied-material jobs or anything unusual may take longer — we'll tell you up front if so.
Can I pick up or do you deliver?
Both. Pickup is from Helensvale by appointment — we'll send the address when your job is ready. Local delivery covers the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan and Tweed Heads, quoted per job. Freight elsewhere in Australia on request.
